What year is it in the Islamic calendar?

Ask what year it is in the Islamic calendar and you will usually be given a single number, but the honest answer is a pair of them. Every Gregorian year overlaps two Hijri years, because the Hijri year is about eleven days shorter and its New Year arrives earlier each time around. 2026 begins inside 1447 AH and ends inside 1448 AH, and neither number is more correct than the other - it depends entirely on which day you are asking about.

Every date below is a civil calculation from the Umm al-Qura calendar, the same engine behind the converter on this site, and can differ by about a day from a locally sighted date.

One Gregorian year, two Hijri years

The Hijri year count advances on 1 Muharram, the Islamic New Year. Because a Hijri year lasts 354 or 355 days against the Gregorian 365 or 366, 1 Muharram lands 10 to 12 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year. The boundary between two Hijri years therefore falls somewhere in the middle of every Gregorian year, never conveniently on 1 January.

That is why the question in the title has two answers. On 1 January 2026 the Umm al-Qura date is 12 Rajab 1447. On 31 December 2026 it is 22 Rajab 1448. The same Gregorian year starts in one Hijri year and finishes in the next, with the change falling on 16 June 2026 - the day before it is still 29 Dhu al-Hijjah 1447.

So the first correction to make to any one-number answer is to add the date range it is true for. The table below shows the split for three consecutive Gregorian years.

The Islamic New Year walks backwards through the calendar

Watch 1 Muharram across a run of years and the pattern is unmistakable: the Islamic New Year moves steadily earlier in the Gregorian calendar, from midsummer toward spring, at 10 to 12 days per step.

The step is not always the same size, because a Hijri year is sometimes 354 days and sometimes 355, while a Gregorian year is sometimes 365 and sometimes 366. The combinations give a shift of 10, 11 or 12 days, which averages out to about 11.

The Islamic New Year is an observance in its own right, so the usual caution applies. These are civil calculations from a published table, not sighting announcements; the day a community marks can differ by about a day from any calculated calendar, and follows its local religious authority.

Why adding 579 (or 578, or 622) does not work

The Hijri era begins in 622 CE, the year of the Hijra, so it is tempting to treat the difference between the year numbers as a constant: subtract 622, or use one of the polished shortcuts such as adding 579 to a Hijri year to get the Gregorian one. Every such constant is doomed, because the two calendars have been diverging by about eleven days a year for fourteen centuries, and the year numbers drift with them.

The Umm al-Qura data shows the drift directly. Take the Gregorian year in which each Hijri year begins, and subtract the Hijri year number from it. That offset was 582 when the embedded table opens and it shrinks by one roughly every 33 years:

An add-a-number rule is therefore at best a snapshot. It points at roughly the right pair of Hijri years for a few decades around the moment it was coined, it can never tell you which of the two overlapping years your date actually falls in, and eventually it stops reaching the right pair at all.

  • 1 Muharram 1318 AH fell on 30 April 1900 - offset 582.
  • 1 Muharram 1383 AH fell on 24 May 1963 - offset 580.
  • 1 Muharram 1447 AH fell on 26 June 2025 - offset 578.
  • 1 Muharram 1499 AH, the last year in the Umm al-Qura table, begins on 9 December 2075 - offset 576.

The honest shortcut: the 33-year cycle

There is one piece of arithmetic worth memorising, and it is a cycle rather than a constant. The Hijri calendar gains one full year on the Gregorian calendar roughly every 33 Hijri years, which is roughly 32 Gregorian years - eleven days of drift per year multiplied by 33 years is about one whole year.

The Umm al-Qura table shows the cycle cleanly. 1 Muharram 1420 fell on 17 April 1999, and 1 Muharram 1453, exactly 33 Hijri years later, falls on 23 April 2031. Thirty-two Gregorian years have passed and the date has crept forward by only six days.

So if you can remember one anchor pair - say 1447 AH beginning in June 2025 - you can estimate any other era: step 33 Hijri years and 32 Gregorian years at a time, and interpolate at eleven days per year in between. It is an estimate good to within days, not an exact rule. For the exact answer you still need to convert a real date.

How to get the exact answer
